The Simien is an area of highland country in the northern part of Ethiopia. It constitutes one of the major mountain massifs in Africa including the fourth highest mountain in Africa, Ras Dashen, which is 4620m high. The national park is located to the north of Gondar and east of the main road to Axum
Simien Mountains National Park covers an area of 254 square kilometers. Commonly known as the roof of Africa, it is the most marvelous of all Ethiopian landscapes. It is gazetted as a national park in 1969 and now has been declared a world heritage site by UNESCO. It is the ideal place for mountain trekking.
Along this route the beautiful landscapes of the rift valley lakes, the ideal place to visit rural villages, variety of beautiful bird species, the fascinating body decorations of the south Omo people and the untouched Netch Sar and Mago national parks can be visited.

Ethiopia provides more habitats for more than 800 species of birds. Of these 16 is wholly restricted to Ethiopia and thus are endemic. 14 other bird species are shared with Eritrea. Among the several types of habitat, wetlands and riverine systems are sites for wintering or passage migrants.
Ethiopia to have more endemic flora and fauna than any other regions in Africa. Some 862 species of birds have been recorded in Ethiopia, of which more than 23 species of birds are endemic. The unique rift valley lakes and national parks, both in the low lands and high land areas, are the ideal places for birding.
